A little something about beekeeping tourism in Slovenia

“Tourism is people” – this was the slogan familiar to all Slovenes, which still rings true today. Because Slovenian beekeepers are well aware of our rich tradition, one that few nations around the world can boast – beekeeping was once called the poetry of agriculture, as well as our important role in preserving the natural environment and the significance of bee products for a healthy diet, we are pleased to assume an active and equal role in Slovenian tourism. We are certain that visitors from both Slovenia and abroad will see and learn many new things. We also have tales to tell that will fascinate both young and old – these include stories about the mysterious lives of bees, the amazing success of treating various illnesses with bee products, the life and work of some of Slovenia's best-known beekeepers, and many other things.

Welcome to Slovenia!

Vice President of Slovenian Beekeeper's Association

Tradition of Slovenian beekeeping

Beekeeping in Slovenia is a traditional agricultural activity. More than 230 years ago, the first teacher of beekeeping in imperial Vienna, Anton Janša (1734-1773), presented the knowledge of the Slovenian rural small farmer to the world. We have more than 7,000 beekeepers in Slovenia, most of who are members of the Slovenian Beekeepers Association.

Beekeeping in Slovenia has a long tradition; therefore we can find a lot of traces of it in folk art. Painted beehive panels have become a valued ornament on Slovenian hives and hives have become typical in Slovenian rural architecture, their appearance enriches the cultural aspect of the Slovenian landscape even today.

Beekeeping as an agricultural sector has a great social importance in Slovenia. The bee accompanies us throughout life. In the childhood the bee symbolises diligence and care for others. When we grow up we admire its efficiency, social order and economy. When a man matures, it is useful to seek additional anchors, hobbies and finding interest not only in work and maintenance of our homes. One of the hobbies strengthening our mind and our body is also beekeeping, since bees and the care for them can be the best medicine for stress and ailments we experience due to the current rapid pace of life.

There are more than 22,000 different species of living organisms in Slovenia; this fact makes our little place among the richest natural areas in Europe. Experts also say we can even speak about Slovenia as a European biotic park, also due to our Carniola bee.

Laws of bee colonies may be an example to us all. Respect, loyalty, responsibility to its own and common functions are the basis for their survival. These are also the basics of survival in nature. The sooner we will accept these principles as our own, the greater the chance to preserve our world.

I invite you along the paths of Slovenian beekeeping heritage!

Boštjan Noč
President of Slovenian Beekeepers Association

Slovenia is following the principles of sustainable tourism

Slovenes, we live in a special and unique land: the land of unspoiled nature, rich in natural resources and extraordinary biodiversity. This extraordinary biodiversity is an excellent foundation for the creation of tourist products, which follow the principles of sustainable tourism. It is an excellent basis for creating a story about green tourism destination.

Slovenes, we live in a country that is special also in the area, which is actually a prerequisite for biodiversity; this is the field of beekeeping. Slovenia is a land of Carniolan bee, quality bee products and developed beekeeping touristic routes. Honey is gaining ground in Wellness offer.

I am confident that the tourism offer and products, which will include these outstanding features in an innovative manner, and which will draw from local features, local resources, products with minimal negative environmental impact, are becoming the winners in the escalating competitive battle on the European and global tourism market.
